There are many instances in this journey we call life that darkness befalls the heart and soul of the journey man or woman. In those times, a light is needed so that you are able to see the path ahead. When that light comes in the form of a human being, you have a tendency to miss the light. Often after that person has left you , you feel a warmth that never existed before.

The person who has affected my life in a significant way, is someone I consider closer than a sister. Her name, Tamara. Every time I needed her she would appear like an angel out of nowhere. In a time where values and attitudes have changed, and self esteem is something that either is there or not, in a fast paced world, this friend found time to care and to share. She taught me how to love myself for the silliest reasons. She told me countless times to look at life as being apart of me and not myself as being a part of life. She allowed me to be myself in a world crowded with artificiality. “There is no one harder to please than yourself”, that was what she told me, and I took it to heart. She was the one who taught me to seek the smaller things in life, and appreciate them, not over look them as if they had no value. That is what this wonderful person taught me. In a time where the weak are often to left to be crushed, and the strong look on, this giant took the other path, and she dared to look on a dwarf, and call her “sister.”

I have long since moved from the stage where I was not sure of how to take life at face value, however, she still teaches me, about myself and about life. Whenever I think about what life was, and what life is now, I somehow feel a warmth that I’ve never felt before.

My whole life has been transformed. I wake each morning and am thankful I have one more day to create a beautiful memory, and take on a new challenge.

I never appreciated life as much as I could until Tamara entered my world, almost a broken one.

Identify a personal hero and articulate the influence this person has had on you - Identify a personal hero and articulate the influence this person has had on you I learn Spanish literature from a petite, sophisticated woman who has yet to appear in anything less that pearls, a well-cut suit and carefully scraped-back hair. Nevertheless, not one class has gone by without her eventually sitting cross-legged on her desk, eyes intent behind wire-rimmed glasses, hair slipping from her ponytail as if in agreement with her insistence that Spanish is exciting and all-encompassing, that Spanish literature is life reflected....   [tags: College Admissions Essays]532 words

Essay on What it takes to be a hero - The media is quick to attach the word “hero” to anyone that does a good deed. I disagree with this because, good deeds don’t necessarily make you a hero, they make you a good person. Being heroic should come naturally. Heroes are born, not made. A hero must be courageous, kind-hearted and humble. I understand that many people have their own view on what a hero is. People label heroes by the things they do. Some even label people heroes just because they are famous. There is a big difference between a role model and a hero....   [tags: Role Model, Personal Sacrifice, Military]

My Mother, My Hero Essay

My Mother, My Hero

In 1859 Henry Ward Beecher said, "the mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom." I believe that statement because of experiences I’ve had with my own mother. I have learned more about life from her than from my 15 years of schooling. Over the last 20 years my mother has taught me many valuable lessons just by being a living example of compassion, thoughtfulness, and generosity. She is an angel that has protected and carried me throughout life.

In the book, One Day My Soul Just Opened Up, Iyanla Vanzant said, "a truly compassionate person is one who can feel what you feel because they are one with you in mind, body, and spirit, not out of obligation or a false sense of responsibility. A compassionate person is…show more content…

Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was ‘her star’. It touched me that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first.

The third aspect I admire in my mother is her generosity. She is always buying things for others. We aren’t a rich family by any means, but she is always giving. Just a few weeks ago my mother’s friend was talking about not being able to afford a new winter coat for her son. That night my mother went out and bought him one. Then about a month ago my mother heard about a woman who is a recovering drug addict.
